Major Expansion Upcoming at Los Cabos International Airport
The Pacific Airport Group improvements
The Pacific Airport Group (GAP) has unveiled its 2025-2029 Master Development Plan, committing more than 52billion pesos (approximately $2.56 Billion USD) to upgrade and enhance 12 major airports across Mexico. Among them is Los Cabos International Airport (SJD)—one of the country’s most critical travel hubs—which will receive significant infrastructure upgrades and road access improvements.
San José del Cabo International Airport now
San José del Cabo International Airport (airport code of SJD) and is the 5th busiest in Mexico. The architect of Los Cabos International Airport’s 1997 renovation and expansion was Mexican architect and great-grandson of Queen Isabella II of Spain, Manuel De Santiago-de Borbón González Bravo. He was a member of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites), and his lifetime architectural legacy to Mexico adds to 11,000,000 square meters (120,000,000 sq ft) built nationwide, including famous buildings and national sites, as well as important national restorations like the Mexican Houses of Congress Palace.
Upcoming investment
The 2025-2029 Master Development Plan for Los Cabos International Airport is advancing with an investment of nearly 7 billion pesos, aimed at implementing a single terminal by the end of the project. CEO of GAP (Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico), Raúl Revuelta, presented the developments and future projections.
Why It All Matters For Your Next Trip?
We at Cabo Riders Tours are quite enthusiastic about the upcoming changes at Los Cabos Airport—so let us explore what this significant transformation truly signifies for your next Cabo vacation.
- More choice, better prices: Airlines love brand-new gates and longer operating windows. More seats heading south usually translate into friendlier fares.
- Stress-free peak seasons: Holiday crush at Thanksgiving or Easter? The extra aircraft stands and check-in capacity should keep the chaos to a minimum.

More Direct Flights—Goodbye, Awkward Layovers
Increased Nonstop Flights—Farewell to Uncomfortable Layovers
A larger and more efficient airport allows airlines to initiate new direct routes. SJD now links to 40 cities in the Canada and United States (an increase from fewer than 20 just four years prior), and authorities indicate that the expansion of the apron and the addition of gates will “create opportunities for even more markets.”
Fewer Delays & Smaller Crowds
- The most dramatic air-side upgrade is a 52 % expansion of the commercial aircraft apron—from 23 to 30 parking positions. That alone will ease the Tetris-like shuffle of arriving jets during peak hours.
- On the ground, GAP is carving out 27,000 m² of new access roads and parking space, meaning your ride-share doesn’t spend half an hour in a taxi queue.
– A new terminal with three levels is planned, which will feature more efficient documentation and boarding processes.
– The airport is also acquiring 80 hectares of land to build a second runway, which will double hourly movements and reduce delays
New Road Infrastructure, Better transportation
– A new underpass is being built to reduce congestion around the Fonatur roundabout, which will:
– Improve traffic flow: Cutting down travel time between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas
– Enhance safety: Reducing the risk of accidents and improving road safety
– The project includes additional features like traffic cameras, pedestrian upgrades, and green spaces
